The same in Canada and the USA. Also, in Japan, where I am currently
living, the words used to refer to any middle aged man or women are forms
of "uncle" and "aunt". These can be used even if you don't know the
people. The words for older adults are forms of "grandfather" and
"grandmother". Maybe it is universal.
