MIKE:
Thanks for all those Finnish ideas. When I actually start doing that
cover, I'll need to rely on the editors or someone like you to help me
choose a Finnish theme. I can't do it alone since this cover is supposed to
seem "Finnish" to someone in Finland, not to ME. Even though I know easy
stuff like where Finland is (that's more than 80% of Americans know about
any country, including America), and I know they have reindeer and seals, I
still don't know all the stuff that would seem most authentically "Finnish"
to someone who lives there IN the culture and society. F'rinstance, the
Finnish legends and folktales which may be known to every person in Finland,
but which we in America (or perhaps even Sweden) have never had reason or
opportunity to have heard of.
Two things you may not understand -- one is that the contents of
that hardback book has already been picked from my older stories. There will
be a combination of old 10-page-gag stories and long adventures. But there
will be NO new special story set in Finland. Only the COVER will be Finnish.
Secondly, you must have missed my announcement on here -- I found
that I WILL NOT be coming to Finland in November as I first thought I might.
Perhaps some other time, but no plans right now.

Gladstone is the one comic company in the world, as far as I know,
that there's no reason to worry about missing the issues...of. From? Anyway,
they are the only company that sells their own back issues. It might cost
you some "postage and handling", and you can't wait a year to order them (or
they'll overcharge you), but you can always buy a brand-new, unopened back
issue of a Gladstone comic.>

Hmm... Well, here's some small info about Finland: First of all,
Finland is located at Northern parts of Europe between Sweden and Russia just
next to Gulf of Finland (as you might understand from the name). Finland in
Finnish is 'Suomi' and Finnish in Finnish is 'suomi' (very imaginative, eh?)
Finnish people are usually known as silent grumpy people who drink a lot. Even
minors. (maybe you won't use that in your story anyways..) Umm, most Europeans
know that Santa Claus live in Lapland at Northern Finland in a place called
Korvatunturi (Mt. Ear or something in English) and spit on the idea of North
Pole. I do at least. All Finnish people speak English because it is taught
in schools since third grade. Finnish winter is long and cold and most of the
other seasons are wet, dark, dirty, discusting fall or noughtumn as it was in
my English book. There is a sommer too when Finnish people go to their summer
cottages and at Midsummer festival make big fires at the coast line. According
to old Finnish superstition, that's supposed to keep bad spirits away. Some
90% of Finnish people like ice hockey and other sports (I don't but I'm a
little wierd) and gather before tvs yelling every time somebody moves. Finnish
main religion is evancelic lutherism (sp?), Finland has been independent since
1917 and I live here. President of Finland is very over-weighted Martti
Ahtisaari and 1955 I think it was Juho Kusti Paasikivi. Most common Finnish
name is Matti Virtanen. Some special animals that only live in Finland are
seal of Saimaa and reindeer (Lapland in general). Finnish people is still
weakly classified on some kind of tribe system (as you might say yourself as
American Italian) and some useful are the mystical Sames, barbarious Ostro-
bothnians, slow h{m{l{iset (don't know the word for that in English) and
the all-mighty Satakuntans (you might guess I'm from the previously mentioned).
The National Epic of Finland is Kalevala where the chief and the sage of
Kalevalans, V{in{m|inen battles against monsters, Sames and does other things.
The book should also be available in English but it's all just a tale and
written about as wierdly as the Windigo story of yours. Aku Ankka (Donald Duck)
magazine was first out in Finland 1951 and since that it has been continuously
coming so that if your story takes place at 1955, Donald Duck should be known
to at least some matter (if the comic book exits in tour universe as it did in
Marco Rota's). A good idea for an adventure might actually be, now when I think
about it, in the Kalevala. See, in there Joukahainen, the demigod-smith makes
the Sampo, a money-machine, which creates money or gold or something just like
that from thin air. $crooge might be after that. And in the cover of your book
you could put for example Donald Duck sight-seeing in Finland (I'll need time
to think of something less corny :)
Is your hardback going to be out before you arrive here?
"Of Ducks and Dimes and Destinies" is finally coming to Egmont?! 8-)
Can you give me some rough amount of time when I should be waiting for it?
