The discussion on the meaning of Gladstone led me to an American dictionary
where it said:

"a travelling bag with flexible sides on a rigid frame that opens flat into
two compartments"

The definition says that it is often capitalized, which indicates that it was
probably the name of the manufacturer of such a bag and became used to
describe other similar bags, much in the same way Americans say Xerox for
photocopy and Kleenex for tissue.

But the definition makes me think that I've seen Gladstone Gander carrying
such a bag.
