It seems to be derived from a Greek verb meaning "to grab", so the name
means something like "grabber" or "grabbing"!

Regarding the names Picsou/Gripsou, the English term "penny pincher",
meaning "miser" somehow seems relevant.

Now *why* had I never thought of this? Now that you've pointed it out,
it seems so obvious!
