Hi Olaf  (and all)!

The machine is a "nucleonic linear emisser" (what else could it be called? ;)  ). Gyro got the idea
from the SF magazine "Far Out Stories", featuring "Ten Seconds to Mars", by Spicer Willits.
(another cross-thread; this time fans instead of  creators)
The story is "Stranger than Fiction" (WDC&S 249, June '61) (Album 42).
