The bells of Notre-Dame tolled for a couple of minutes
before noon today, Sept 14.
At 12:00, President Jacques Chirac and US Ambassador to France
Howard H. Leach stepped out into the courtyard of the Elysée
(the French equivalent of the White House) and France came to a halt
(metros and such stopped, classes stopped, ...) for three minutes,
as did fellow EU countries.
At the Elysée, after almost five minutes of silence, the Garde Républicaine
played "The Star Spangled Banner".

This was an unprecedented event.
But more importantly-- it was a most moving moment.

Olivier
