a magical checkboard that could double anything you put on the first
square, then double it, then double, it, etc, until you reached the
last square. 

When was this published?  It sounds like it could have been based on an Uncle Scrooge gag in which Huey, Dewey, and Louie try to trick Scrooge into putting a penny on the first square and then doubling it for every other square and that would be their allowance or something like that.
Obviously, by using a little math, before getting halfway through the board, one million dollars could be made with the final figure being 1.8x10^17 dollars.

Can anyone confirm my memory of this gag?
