I wonder how people can catch up with the amount of mail on DCML...
I have no time lately to send mails to DCML, because I need all my time to *read* DCML mails. 8-)

Egmont (Copenhagen, Denmark) has nothing to do with Holland (and the Dutchmen). So you're talking about 2 different publishers here, with 2 possibly different policies.
And so is Rob Klein, in his later mail. He wrote stories for both publishers!
So Rob is not contradicting himself.

About political reasons: especially after WWII, there is no reason to *not* make fun of the Germans in Holland...
But Ludwig has no German accent in the Dutch translations.
He was dropped in 1974 because he resembled Gyro too much. Also, at the time, they were (re-)introducing other characters like Brer Rabbit, Joe Carioca, Izzy, and Horace Horsecollar. So Ludwig and Fethry (and Belle Duck, Witch Child, and some others) "died".
