My vote goes to this one.

That wouldn't make sense, because Scrooge visits Scotland in
"The Billionaire of Dismal Downs," and there is no mention of
Fergus' remarriage.  There would be no reason to hide something
like that.  And Fergus then dies.  (Plus, I imagine Downy's
ghost would have a jealous tiff upon greeting him.  ;)

Easy...his mother remarried after her divorce with Fergus.  Her
second husband was named McFowl, so she and her son took that
name.  Not that unusual.
