For what purpose you need your scans? For print or for web?

This is pretty good for printing, but tiff would be better format, if you 
want it to not to loose any data. Sometimes you might need to scan comic 
pages with "desreen" filter, it omits moiré -phenomena that comes from 
scanning images with halftone (small raster dots).

The bigger the dpi is the better quality image you'll have and bigger file. 
Saving for web is usually 72 dpi.
