What exactly are "stats"?

I second the motion!

As far as I can tell, "stat" is short for "photostat", for which wikipedia 
redirects to the article on photocopying. My guess is that "photostat" is a 
fancy way of saying "photocopy", possibly because of the electrostatic process 
used in making photocopies.
