<div>Greetings!</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Paper comic books, like newspapers, may indeed not be around by the end of the century. I recently saw an advertisement on TV about the iPad from Apple: something like that might preserve the idea of a comic book for the future. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>On the other hand, children might wonder why the cartoons don't move, and why they have to read the story, rather than watching and listening passively.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>We will see what happens to literacy in this century: one would think that it would be increasing, and be seen as more important than ever. But as a teacher I can tell you that reading ability is declining.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>American literary critic Sven Birkerts wrote a rather pessimistic analysis of the "future of reading in an electronic age" in 1996 called <EM>The Gutenberg Elegies.</EM></div>
