I applaude Mikko Aittola's reply to the letters written by John Lustig.
Mr. Lustig reffered to 2 sides of the truth but forgot to tell the whole
truth! For those of you who are unfamiliar with how the law-suit really
got started, it stemmed from a fax written by Bill Grandey dated April
21,1994 to a German fan. In that fax Mr. Grandey made some statements
about Don Rosa that were libelous. Quoting exactly from the fax: "Mr.
Rosa sneaked into the seminar as a comic store clerk, in colusion with
his local comic store owner." (Don was a guest of mine at the Atlanta
seminar and it was announced in the CBG weeks prior to the seminar)
Further quotes from the fax: "We (Mr. Grandey) got half a dozen calls to
our room explaining how angry Mr. Rosa was and that he had been drinking.
Carl at 93 was fearful of his personal security. he was concerned that
there was an angry man that might be at his door or in his face at an
event at any time during this seminar. It spoiled the event for Carl.
We have stalking laws here. carl was being stalked, in retrospect,we
should have made out a police report."
First of all I live 1000 miles from Don, not exactly his local comic
store owner. If Don's presence at the show was in the CBG weeks before
the seminar, he certainly didn't "sneak" anywhere.
Most of all, Don was not "drinking" and certainly not "stalking" Carl Barks!
The one opportunity to meet Carl, happened one day at the seminar when
Carl walked through the lobby where Don, Byron Erickson, and I were sitting.
I got up approached Carl and got a picture taken with him. Don did not
want to meet Carl in that way, and he stayed seated in the lobby. Carl
met with a few people who noticed him and happened to be in the right
place at the right time. If Carl was "fearful of his personal security"
he didn't show it that day. If Don were stalking Carl, he really didn't
take the opportunity that arose!
If someone had said these things about ME, I would have sued the "weasel"
too!
The next paragraph of the fax mentioned an argument with John Lustig.
It certainly was not the reason Don Rosa sued Bill Grandey!
Everything I have written here is as it happened. I was there!
Sincerely,
Barry Branvold
