who was Erich von Stroheim?

Well Von Strheim looked like that in all his movies. There's a good 
documentary on him entilled "The Man You Love To Hate", because of the amount 
of WW1 era anti-German propaganda films he was in.  
But yes, he is a likely suspect for the charachter.
