Hey Even!
I can't resist responding to that Norwegian article!
>Mickey Mouse [...] is the antithesis to the
>"brave and well adjusted ducks", he is the smart detective
>that never detects anything that can be dangerous to the
>system.
While some of the author's objections to the Ducks may be a little
whacked out, I actually think this is a very *good* argument against certain
types of traditional Mickey Mouse stories!
Gottfredson's Mickey was a "Mouse Against The World," who might help
a (somewhat less-incompetent than later on) Chief O' Hara now and then, but
who was also opposed, very often, to a stiflingly pompous and bureaucratic -
and occasionally corrupt - system. Mickey's a little scrap of a guy; the
little guy is supposed to be fighting against the status quo, not for it all
the time. I think the best Mickey creators of today bring back this tension:
in which Mickey's universe seems so much more blisteringly real, and in
which the Mouse himself is freed from his authority figure status.
It would be great if this Norwegian writer would take a look at the
new stuff that's being done, but maybe he got scared off long ago. Who
knows?
Best,
David
