The (*real*) discussion about this has been very interesting. Especially
because John Garvin likes these paintings very much, without having read any
of the comics they refer to (if I remember correctly). This shows that they
*do* have a quality on their own, at least to some people. Maybe we, who
have read Barks comics for decades, cannot judge this extra quality.
Probably the best way to judge this, is to look at Barks' non-Disney
paintings. They obviously don't refer to any Disney story directly. I myself
haven't examined Barks' non-Disney paintings closely enough to say something
about their quality.
