"Hard" SF

"Hard" Science Fiction is a term that reffers to Science Fiction that
is mostly technology or science-driven instead of character or plot-driven.
Usually the characters are only incidental. And usually the science and
technology actually make sense, which is why Voyager is not Hard SF -- it's
just *bad* SF. It tries to be character and plot driven and fails utterly due
to weak characters and weak plots, ends up relying on treknobbable to solve
all their problems but do *that* badly as well. (Oh, and please don't assume
all Trek is this bad -- Voyager is just plain terrible, but most of the other
three series, the movies, and many of the novels and comics are *really*
good...)
By the way, there were no "rubber" spaceships involved in the episode
you saw -- all the VFX were computer generated. :-)
