That doesn't sound far-fetched to me at all. We know how much Barks
liked to make word-puns both in titles and dialogue, so it would
surprise me if he hadn't thought of the painting the town red-reference
- BTW A danish Song contest-winner was about exactly this, painting the
town red. 
But, as we both have english as our second language, maybe someone here
is more sure if this is a pun Barks thought of.

The word you look for (karakter) is grade. Your 6 corresponds to
something like A or A+ which is utterly great! Congratulations :-) (we
have the same word, and you have to be careful not to mix it up with
the word chrecter eg comic charecter or such. There's a link, but it's
hard to explain)

Okay about Kentucky, I expected it to be so. I don't know much about
Kentucky either, other than some of my friends live there. 

About the flash back-solution, that is one of the ones I can think up
too.
