Yesterday, I discovered a link to the "Galerie Laqua" site,
"http://www.comicoriginalart.com", which is in German and English.

This email contains the site's descriptions of original Barks (related)
art, with links to the pictures. ("DvE" notes are written by me.)

I've mentioned the other artists shown on each page, but not the
details. Whenever the site's art has been published in Galerie Laqua's
catalogues 02-2000, 03-2000, and 04-2000, I've mentioned it. As these
are the only issues in my possession, I have no idea about other
catalogues.

BTW. The catalogues contain art not shown on the site. As soon as time
permits me, I will make a detailed list of at least the Barks art.

[Panthom opens trap door under Ducks. Different from the design shown in
"The Carl Barks Library" (set 5, page 289). This version contains black
area's for the phantom and the dark below the trapdoor. The nephew at the
right has his mouth open, instead of being the only one to have his mouth
closed. This version contains the logo lay-out, but in the version in
"The Carl Barks Library" the logo layout may have been removed by the
editors. DvE.]

Carl Barks: The Carl Barks Library of Walt Disney's Donald Duck

1980's, layout for the publication (Set I) from Another Rainbow,
pencil, red and blue pencil on tissue paper, signed, 50,5 x 41 cm /
DM 7.900.- ($ 3,900)

[Possibly the design published in black-and-white in "The Carl Barks
Library", set 1, page 231, second illustration, which is a study for a
never realized painting on which the set's cover was based. At the time
of publication it was not known whether or not Barks would eventually
render the concept as a full-sized oil. I have no idea in which phase
this idea was rejected. Is it known if Barks has made some preliminary
oils of this design? DvE.]

1980's layout for the oilpainting, pencil on tissue paper, signed,
18 x 16 cm / DM 1.890.- ($ 945) [Apparently, Barks experimated with
the placement of Yellow Beak. He can be seen on Scrooge's back, but
also in thin pencil lines on the lid of the chest. DvE.]

Carl Barks: Sheriff of Bullet Valley
"http://www.comicoriginalart.com/galerielaqua/oadis0067.jpg"

1980's, preliminary for a cover of The Carl Barks Library of Walt Disney's
Donald Duck (Another Rainbow), pencil on paper, signed, ca. 21 x 24 cm /
DM 2.600.- ($ 1,300)

[Published in greyscale in Galerie Laqua catalogue 02-2000. I think this
is a pencil study for a never realized painting, of which Barks made a
preliminary painting, titled "Sheriff of Bullet Valley", published in 1989
in a suite of ten litho's. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

But, maybe there have been plans for a "Sheriff of Bullet Valley" cover for
set 2 of "The Carl Barks Library"? Barks made covers for the sets published
from 1983 to 1985 (set 8, 1, 3, 9, and 4). The two sets published in 1986
and 1988 have partial covers. Set 2 is the first of them. (The other is
set 7.) Maybe at this point, Barks decided to quit with making complete
covers? No new cover art was made for remaining set 5, 6, and 10, published
in 1989 and 1990. But then, why "Sherrif of Bullet Valley" as initial cover
choice? An original Barks cover for this story already exists, almost
identical to this design.

BTW. Maybe the 1980s plans for painting "Sheriff of Bullet Valley" were
rejected for such reasons? Barks already had made multiple "Sheriff"
paintings before. A new version would make it one out of eight, while
a new painting with a new design might have been more exciting for
both Barks and his audience.
"Sailing the Spanish Main", 1982, with Scrooge as an added character, is
the last painting as new version of a design, which made it one out of
eight. After this painting, Barks did use some subjects again, sometimes
adding Scrooge (as in "Sailing the Spanish Main"), but all these paintings
have a new design. DvE.]
