Don Rosa and a few other modern creators oftenly use references to
Scrooge's older adventures. But they seem to forget about the life Donald had
before meeting Scrooge on 1947.He was quite an experienced adventurer
judging only from "Donald Duck finfs Pirate Gold" which is only the
begining. If you remember in this story he turns from an innkeeper and a
fisherman to treasure-hunter.For a beginner he does a fine job. This
experience is usualy unmentioned in all newer stories along with the money
he earned in this stories.
Donald is certainly not as great a character as Scrooge but there is no
reason to turn him into the shallow man he is in stories like "Guardians of
the Lost Library".I would like to see him wanting to have some adventure. He
usualy seems forced by Scrooge.Where is his own adventuring spirit? He also
seems to luck ambition.Barks did a great job turning this lazy Duck into an
interesting and complicated character. But just as Scrooge's unwilling
employee he seems to be missing something.Does anybody agree?
