That's a popular belief, but incorrect. Actually, MAD switched to its
present format some months earlier, because Harvey Kurtzman wanted to
upgrade the production values of the material he worked on. (He eventually
wound up with Little Annie Fanny, which, whatever you may say about its
content, was certainly one of the most lavishly-produced comics in American
history.) The fact that distributors were willing to accept it without the
Code seal was a happy side-effect.
