I'm not a bit surprised. The story does have a nice resonance, and ties in
quite nicely with well-known historical facts. A good source to counter it
with the correct version would be "Mad: A History of the Comic Book and
Magazine", by Maria Reidelbach, published by Little, Brown and Company in
1991. Also, if you simply look at the dates, you'll see that MAD converted
to the new format long before the rest of the line was converted to
"picto-fiction", a good plausibility argument for it having done so for
different reasons.

And no, this is not off-topic. MAD once did a parody called "Darnold Duck",
so you see, it falls squarely within the realm of Disney comics.
