It is correct that Japan capitulated August 15, 1945, accepting the
Potsdam Declaration by the Allied Powers. This date is often incorrectly
referred to as "V-J Day" (= Victory over Japan Day)), but the actual date
for V-J Day is September 2, 1945, when the Japanese signed the surrender
documents aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. This date also marks the
formal end to World War II.
