Gyro's thinking cap

Do you have an idea about how Gyro's thinking cap works?
Maybe the birds' droppings countain chemical substances which
favor thinking, but he hides them behind a cap so nobody 
knows that birds actually often defecate on his head :-) If 
it is so, then I prefer Barksian way for him to get an idea : 
a good old hammer blow on the head :-)
Are you aware of other ways for Gyro to get an idea?
