Question about story

Hi all!

I have one question concerning  this story:

Do they play American football in this story or soccer?
I ask this because there is Danish remake of this story, and I was wondering 
if that is the reason for why they decided to re-draw it. Changing Football 
into soccer, which was much more familiar in Europe at that time.
