Non-Disney comics

• Air Pirates Funnies was an underground comic book with Disney characters by Dan O'Neill. #1 was published in 1972. It was sued by Disney and the judgment came down shortly after #3 was printed, so distribution of it was forbidden. A few messages sent to the mailing list contain more information.
• Howard the Duck has also been under pressure from Disney. I've saved some messages about it from the list.
• Uncensored Mouse was a reprint from Eternity Comics of very early Mickey strips, that supposedly were in the public domain. It seems like some of the earliest strips actually are, but two of those published by Eternity had been printed in Mickey Mouse Book from late 1930, after their newspaper publication. This publication made the copyright registration for those two stories different, so that they were still protected. Hence the demise of their series.
• Superman: The Man of Steel #56 (May 1996?) from DC Comics sports a cover where Mr. Mxyzptlk swims in a money bin, in a Scrooge McDuck fashion. The issue is written by Louise Simonson, pencilled by Jon Bogdanove, and inked by Dennis Janke.
• In the episode for July 14, 1996, of the newspaper comic strip Big Nate, a team of Boy Scouts refer to themselves as Junior Woodchucks.
• Gus, one of the two main characters of the comic strip Tommy, greatly resembles the Phantom Blot in appearance.
• In Untold Tales of Spider-Man Annual 1997 there is a Untold Tales You'll Never See drawing by Don Rosa showing J. Jonah Jameson swimming in money like Scrooge McDuck. There are two D.U.S.K.s in the drawing. The S's stand for Stan Lee and and Steve Ditko.
• Bill Elder did a Mickey/Donald parody called Mickey Rodent. It was first published in MAD #19 (January 1955). It has been reprinted some 20 years ago in one of the first MAD Super Specials, and in the MAD pocket book Inside Mad. It seems like it will be reprinted in the 7th issue of the new Mad-EC Reprints series somewhere late 1998 or late early 1999 [this is written in 1997].
• Simpsons Comics #36 has a one-page parody of Donald, Scrooge, the nephews and the Money bin. Script Ian Boothby, layouts by Erick Tran, layouts and pencils by Julius Preite, inks by Tim Bavington.

• In the letter column of Uncle Scrooge 282, Rick Cross reports that the novel Starfire (1988) by Paul Preuss contains the following quote:

  The walls of his den were solid with shelving, dense with collectors' items: fine large-scale working model steam engines made of brass, and fully rigged sailing ships, and old cars, and gold coins framed under glass on black velvet, and albums of stamps boxed in acid-free handboard portfolios, and picture books--books about crystal, about china, about antique furniture, about guns, about arms and armor, about jade and netsuke and Cycladic figurines and Uncle Scrooge comic books--about almost every class of object worth collecting.
