Or they could use a razor blade to remove stains and blots. 
Actually all of the old methods are better than todays "modern" material. 
As an artist myself I stick to my brushes and nibs, my thick inking paper, 
my black ink and my light table. Using the same stuff as my favorite artists
used in the 30's and 40's.
