No, wonder. It's well known that the average American knows next to nothing
about the geography outside USA. For instance many Americans don't know the
difference between the Scandinavian countries and far less the names of the
biggest cities here. On the contrary close to every Scandinavian knows the
names of most of the states in the US and the names of many of the cities
over there. So the "American readers" that you are referring to would
probably think that Greenland is populated by aliens or something.

But if that is true, why did he later bother to make stories that took place
in Peru, the Himalayas and even in Norway – if he was so concerned about the
"American readers" that wouldn't understand much of that Geography anyway.

list. AFAIK all Americans in this list are well oriented in Geographical
questions.
