Cod liver oil is an excellent source of vitamins A and D.  A brief bit of

So it essentially is used as a regular source of nutrition.

Castor oil, on the other hand, is ingested only as needed to ease
constipation or to induce vomiting.  For more details:

Midwives rely on castor oil as a means to get delivering mothers to purge
themselves so they can concentrate on pushing the newborn child through the
birth canal without worrying about the effect that pushing would have on
their bowels.
