There is huge volume by David Kunzle:
The Early Comic Strip : narrative strips and picture
stories in the European broadsheet from c.1450 to 1825 /
David Kunzle. -- Berkeley : University of California Press, 1973. -- 471 p

Some of the examples in the book are definitely comics. Narratives with 
pictures accompanied with text. Some medieval pages are astoundingly modern 
in their lay-out.
