The past of Scrooge plays an important part in many american and italian Scrooge's stories, the unknow past, lived as a black hole, something unpredictable, which comes back in an unexpected way for haunting the present, often for the worse; this is such the case in stories like 'oncle picsou et le mur de la honte - paperino e la vecchia ricevuta - 1967; in 'Donald et le Tignouf' - Voodoo Hoodoo - 1949, an african sorcerer was seeking for revenge after a dark story of soils Scrooge had concluded in his young age; in 'Donald roi du cirque Konstanz' - paperino e il grande barunz - 1957, we find Scrooge at his craftiest behaviour, he doesn't hesitate to leave his associate while this one is chased by angry indians (we are very far from the peak of the character innocence of the Tralla La story, but, in general, as i said before in a previous comment, the Scrooge of Carl Barks is kinder than the italian Scrooge, and so, that leads to different stories with different plots due to a different -but not entirely different- characterization); we must note that in these italian stories the past of Scrooge has not often the same significance than in Carl Barks; in Barks for example in the 'Magic Hourglass', the quest for recovering the hourglass is a search for rebuilding the Scrooge's wealth due to the magic powers of the object, this is not a quest to 'exorcize' a shady past like in 'Barunz'.
Romano Scarpa's technique (2): In Scarpa too, a lot of stories find their explanation in the past of the protagonists (for Mickey : Topolino e la collona Chirikawa, Calidornia, in some proportion 'dimensione Delta' too (the picture of an early Mickey, reminiscent of the imaginary of Gottfredson, given by Mirandus to Atomiinus); for Scrooge, The flying Scottman - Donald et la légende de l'Ecossais volant - paperino e la leggenda dello Scozzese volante - 1957 where the 'double' of Scrooge is a really impressive ghost in this story, 'Les lentilles de Babylone' - paperino e le lentiecchie di Babilonia - 1960, where the most part of the story is a flashback.
