Topolino - Tuffolino

Hello all and Italian members especially!

As it seems that there is still some life around here (DCML) I'd like to know if someone knows the answer to this:

During the WW2 Mickey disappeared from pages of Topolino and was changed into different character named Tuffolino. Was this change ever explained to the readers or were there any complaints from the readers wanting Mickey back?
